Magazine Rates Camarillo No. 1 in Cross-Country

The Camarillo High boys’ cross-country team has been honored by The Harrier magazine as the top-ranked team in the nation.
The Scorpions, led by senior Abe Valdez, were undefeated this season. They won the prestigious Mt. San Antonio College invitational in October and the Southern Section 4-A Division and state Division I titles in November.

Cross-country--The finish of the Agoura High girls’ cross-country team in the past three state Division I championships was incorrectly reported in Thursday’s edition. The team has placed second in each of the past three years.
Agoura, led by Kinney national and state Division I champion Bryan Dameworth, was ranked 10th. The Chargers placed third in the state championships after winning the Southern Section 2-A title.
Agoura was ranked fourth in the girls’ poll. The Chargers, led by individual champion Deena Drossin, placed third in the state Division I meet for a third consecutive year.
Mountain View High the Utah state 4-A champion, was the top-ranked team.
Bill Sedgwick of Van Nuys, a rookie on the NASCAR Winston West Series Tour, gave Bill Schmitt a run for his money, but the Redding, Calif., veteran held off Sedgwick to win the 1989 points crown.
Schmitt, 53, on the tour since 1974, finished with 1,845 points, edging Sedgwick by 56 points.
Sedgwick won rookie-of-the-year honors and earned $34,875, second only to Roy Smith of Victoria, B.C., who won $40,780. Schmitt won $34,445.
