HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Pichardo Helps North Hollywood Upset Sylmar

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning, North Hollywood High’s Nelson Pichardo singled to left field to drive in winning pitcher Sammy Ciaramilaro, lifting the host Huskies to a 4-3 upset over East Valley League power Sylmar on Wednesday.
The rally started when Ciaramilaro (1-1), who walked 11 but gave up just four hits in going the distance, singled. He moved to third when basketball star Harry Marks doubled to left-center. After intentionally walking Mike Lewis, losing pitcher James Encinas surrendered the game-winning hit.
For North Hollywood (1-2), shortstop Eric Martinez and Ciaramilaro each had three hits. Dereck Ornelas and Robert Garcia doubled for Sylmar (4-3, 0-2).
In other baseball games:
Poly 3, Grant 1--Senior right-hander Eddie Castellanos threw a six-hitter and had a run-scoring single in the East Valley League game at Poly.
Castellanos (4-0) struck out three and walked none. In the second inning, Castellanos singled to score Gabe Chavez from second and give Poly (5-2, 3-0) a 1-0 lead.
Grant (2-4, 1-1) tied the score in the fourth when Jim Tumbeiro scored on a groundout by Justin Howard.
Reseda 4, Birmingham 0--Sophomore right--hander Jesse Yeoman (2-0) pitched five shutout innings, scattered three hits and struck out nine as Reseda upset Birmingham (3-2-1, 1-1) in a Mid-Valley League game.
Joe Tushnet was three for three with two runs scored and three stolen bases to lead Reseda (2-0).
Monroe 2, Van Nuys 1--Monroe (1-1) scored twice in the bottom of the seventh after Van Nuys had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the seventh of the Mid-Valley League game at Monroe.
With one out and runners at second and third, Monroe’s Mark Montelongo squeezed home Fran Espinosa to tie the score, 1-1, and advance Jeff Rubell to third.
Mario Gonzalez then grounded to short, but first baseman Martin Ramos couldn’t handle the throw and Rubell scored.
With two out in the top of the seventh, David Gomez doubled to drive in Carlos Gonzalez from first.
Sophomore right-hander Adrian Lovrich (1-0) went the distance, striking out two, walking one and yielding five hits.
Tony Gonzalez went the distance for Van Nuys (0-3), striking out two and walking two.
Eagle Rock 9, Verdugo Hills 3--Matt Ward hit two home runs and drove in three runs, but it wasn’t enough in a Northeastern League game at Verdugo Hills.
Scott Boudreaux (1-1) suffered the loss for Verdugo Hills (2-3, 1-2).
Hueneme 4, Camarillo 3--Ray McMichael stroked a two-run double to drive in Danny Garcia and Damon Hicks in the bottom of the seventh to give host Hueneme (3-3) a nonleague win.
McMichael’s hit made a winner of Karl Whitnall (1-1), who struck out four in three innings of relief. Mike Waid (0-1) suffered the loss for Camarillo (6-1). Mitch King and Robert Sanchez had two hits for the Scorpions.
Newbury Park 3, Dos Pueblos 0--Jason Kernan (2-0) and Andy Moffat combined on a two-hitter in a nonleague game at Newbury Park.
Jason Smith went three for four with a run scored and a run batted in for Newbury Park (5-3-1). Teammate Jai Johnston went two for three with a run scored.
Westlake 5, Buena 3--Todd Preston drove in two runs as the Warriors (6-0) came from behind in a nonleague game at home.
Preston, a junior third baseman, singled to drive in two runs in the bottom of the first to even the score at 2-2.
Senior right-hander Scott Lerner (1-0) pitched 4 1/3 innings in relief to earn the win.
Chaminade 8, Calabasas 7--Designated-hitter Jeff Burdick was three for four with four RBIs, three stolen bases and one run scored to lead Chaminade (5-1) to its fifth consecutive victory in a nonleague game. Colin Havert and Aaron Weiss each added two hits for the host Eagles.
Calabasas’ Tom Hoke had two hits, scored one run and had an RBI.
Oak Park 5, Providence 1--Eric Pryor (2-0) struck out 11 for Oak Park in a Highland Hall tournament game. Jeff Gibbons hit two doubles for Oak Park (2-1).
SOFTBALL
Agoura 4, La Reina 0--Junior Melissa Thatcher pitched her third career no-hitter and drove in a pair of runs in a nonleague game at Agoura.
Hoover 2, Arcadia 0--Freshman right-hander Nancy Evans (4-0) struck out 10 while logging her second no-hitter for Hoover (5-0) in the second round of the Glendale tournament. Evans also had a run-scoring double.
BOYS’ TENNIS
Agoura 9, Westlake 9 (Agoura wins on games, 81-71)--For the first time in school history, Agoura defeated Westlake in a nonleague match at Agoura.
Adam Nielson and Brent Novak, playing doubles together for the first time, won all three matches for Agoura (6-1). Agoura’s Dave Soucy also won a key singles match, defeating Brian Scheffer.
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Granada Hills d. Palisades, 14-16, 16-14, 15-13, 6-15, 15-12--Host Granada Hills moved to 4-0 with a nonleague win over perennial City power Palisades.
Brian Herbst, with 27 kills, and Danny Asaoka, with 24 kills, led the way for the Highlanders.
Westchester d. Kennedy, 0-15, 15-12, 4-15, 15-12, 15-8--Eric Germansky had 19 kills to lead Kennedy (2-1) in the Golden Cougars’ nonleague loss.
Arcadia d. Harvard, 10-15, 15-10, 15-9, 15-10--Eric Wells had 16 kills to lead visiting Harvard (1-1).
Birmingham d. Cleveland 15-4, 15-10, 11-15, 15-12--James Gould (16 kills) and Stanley Yu (12 kills) led Birmingham (2-1) to a nonleague victory at home.
