California IN BRIEF : SACRAMENTO : Assemblyman Costa Gets Caucus Post

Assemblyman Jim Costa (D-Fresno) has been elected chairman of the Assembly Democratic Caucus. Costa replaces Assemblywoman Maxine Waters (D-Los Angeles), who gave up her caucus post because of her campaign for the seat of Rep. Augustus Hawkins (D-Los Angeles), who is retiring from Congress. The caucus chairman is the third-ranking Democrat in the Assembly, after Speaker Willie Brown (D-San Francisco) and floor leader Tom Hannigan (D-Fairfield).
