Aztecs Beat Utah; Best WAC Start Since 1981

San Diego State (20-10, 4-0) defeated Utah, 19-8, Sunday at Smith Field to earn its best start in the Western Athletic Conference since 1981.
Leading the Aztecs at the plate were center fielder Jeff Barry, two for five with a double, triple and four RBIs, and left fielder Bill Dunckel, who scored twice and was two for four with four RBIs.
Andy Peterson (2-1) was the winning pitcher.
Utah is 5-16, 0-4.
MEN’S TENNIS
San Diego State (15-5) defeated Texas Tech, 6-0, in the consolation finals of the UC Irvine Tournament.
Aztec singles winners included Tole Marinkovic, who defeated Matt Jackson, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 1 for his seventh consecutive victory, and freshman Dax Peterson, who defeated Charles Bailey, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 6 to improve his record to 9-2.
Texas Tech is 12-3.
UC San Diego (8-6) won a pair of matches, defeating Luther College, 9-0, and University of the South, 8-1.
Chris Belloli and Sig Huber won at No. 1 singles for UCSD. Belloli defeated Luther’s Sujay Lama, 7-5, 6-3, and Huber defeated University of the South’s Tim Luskim, 6-0, 6-4.
Belloli and Huber also combined for victories at No. 1 doubles, defeating Luther’s Lama and Dave Kahl, 6-1, 6-2 and University of the South’s Luskim and David Dye, 6-0, 6-0.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Fourth-ranked USC defeated 17th-ranked USD, 6-3, at the San Diego Tennis and Racquet Club.
The lone singles winner for USD (8-7) was Margo Mullally, who defeated Linda Allred, 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 at No. 6.
