P.M. BRIEFING : U.S., Mexico Discuss Trade Pact

WASHINGTON — The United States and Mexico are talking about negotiating a free trade agreement similar to a U.S.-Canadian trade pact in a bid to create a unified North American market, a U.S. trade official said today.
He noted that President Bush and Mexican President Carlos Salinas de Gortari agreed last year to “examine ways to enhance the U.S.-Mexican trade and investment relationship” and said the discussions stemmed from that understanding.
“We’ve discussed a number of ways to broaden and deepen our relationship, including the requirements necessary for a free trade association,” the official said.
A free trade pact would give each country better access to the other’s markets, labor, technology and know-how.
