Ryan McGuire, a senior left-hander from Woodland Hills El Camino Real High, struck out 20 batters in a regulation, seven-inning baseball game Tuesday.
McGuire, a 6-foot-2 left-hander, threw a five-hitter, walked one and allowed one earned run as El Camino Real defeated Reseda Cleveland, 7-2. McGuire, who struck out 18 in a nine-inning game in his most recent start last Tuesday, retired the first batter on a ground ball to second before getting the next 20 outs on strikes.
The state record for a seven-inning game was set in 1973 by Jim Peterson of La Habra Sonora. Peterson struck out 22, with one batter reaching base on a passed ball by the catcher.
