The west end of the Santa Monica Pier, which was destroyed by heavy storms in 1983, will reopen Friday.
Festivities start at 12:30 p.m., when Mayor Dennis Zane and other city officials parade to the pier from the 3rd Street Promenade at Broadway, accompanied by the Santa Monica High School marching band.
The celebration will continue Saturday with a free jazz concert featuring Conrad Janis and the Unlisted Beverly Hills Jazz Band from noon to 6 p.m. Refreshments will be sold at 1940 prices from noon to 2 p.m., free carousel rides for children will be offered all day, and a fireworks salute will be held at 7:30 p.m.
The entire pier is undergoing a $34.8-million redevelopment. When completed in the summer of 1992, it will include nightclubs, restaurants, retail shops and additional rides.
