THE SUMMIT AFTERMATH : Use His Leverage to Sway Castro’s ‘Behavior,’ Quayle Urges Gorbachev

WASHINGTON — Vice President Dan Quayle said Monday that he has asked Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev to persuade Cuban President Fidel Castro to “change his behavior.”
Quayle met Gorbachev for the first time Friday during the U.S.-Soviet summit. The vice president said they had spoken about the support Moscow has given Cuba, which the United States accuses of funding leftist guerrillas in Central America.
“I encouraged him to do his very best to work to change the behavior of Fidel Castro,” Quayle said on NBC’s “Today” show.
Quayle said he is convinced that the Soviet Union could influence Castro, but he did not say how Gorbachev had responded.
