County Redistricting Decision

For months now, the majority which controls the County Board of Supervisors has wasted its energy--not to mention a fortune in legal fees--fighting to keep their exclusive “club” intact.
Hardly anyone was surprised to learn that Judge Kenyon has ruled against the county in its costly and fruitless effort to block any meaningful reform of the antiquated system under which the county is governed. An appeal will only waste more tax dollars.
While it appears that the issue of fair representation for Los Angeles’ Hispanic population is finally nearing resolution, the judge’s ruling also provides an opportunity for genuine countywide reform. We must completely restructure the board, including increasing the board’s membership to at least nine; reapportion the supervisorial districts in a manner respectful of the county’s communities of interest and diversity, and finally, create the office of county executive.
