A 22-year-old Simi Valley man was among 16 sailors injured in an explosion on a U.S. aircraft carrier this week that left two crew members dead, officials said Friday.
Robert (Shane) Kilgore received second- and third-degree burns over 80% of his body in two explosions Wednesday aboard the aircraft carrier Midway, which had been performing flight exercises at sea near its home port of Yokosuka, Japan, Navy officials said.
Kilgore and six others injured in the blast were flown to the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio on Friday, said Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-Simi Valley).
