Long Beach : Mayor’s Political Backer Named to Port Commission

Alex Bellehumeur, a developer and fund-raiser for Mayor Ernie Kell, has been named Long Beach’s newest harbor commissioner.
Bellehumeur’s appointment to the port’s powerful governing board was confirmed by the City Council on a 6-1 vote, with Councilman Evan Anderson Braude dissenting. Councilmen Warren Harwood and Les Robbins were absent.
Braude, whose district includes Long Beach Harbor, said he thought that there were more qualified candidates than Bellehumeur, who is president of a Los Alamitos development firm. Although he refused to elaborate, Braude said he had received telephone calls over the weekend raising questions about Bellehumeur’s qualifications. “There are a lot of unanswered questions,” Braude said. “I don’t want to go into details.”
Bellehumeur was nominated by Kell, who has turned to Bellehumeur in recent elections to help him raise funds for his campaigns.
