Inner-City Violence and Gun Control

The photograph titled “Guns to Garbage” depicting the destruction of 9,419 “illegal” firearms shown on the front page of the Metro section of July 3 was an appalling depiction of senseless waste.
Few, if any guns shown were “illegal.” All clearly shown were shotguns that could be legally used for pleasure and protection by law-abiding citizens.
It makes no more sense to destroy perfectly useful guns because they were possibly used illegally than it would to destroy all the telephones, computers and automobiles and homes and offices that may have been used for illegal purposes.
At a conservative price of less than $110 each, those guns could be sold for more than $1 million to be used for some worthy cause such as education, victims of crimes, medical research or environmental cleanup.
