United Way Sets Record Goal of $102 Million

With a helping hand from the Dodgers, United Way has launched its annual fund-raising campaign with a record goal of $102 million.
The kickoff took place this week in Los Angeles during pregame festivities at Dodger Stadium and featured a rally for about 5,000 United Way volunteers. Dodgers pitcher Mike Morgan, an honorary campaign chairman, presided.
The goal of $102 million for United Way’s Los Angeles Metropolitan Region chapter is the highest ever. Last year, United Way raised a record $95 million for 350 health and social service charities in Los Angeles, San Bernardino and Kern counties.
“There are so many more needs this year, with job layoffs . . . and threats of recession,” spokesman Larry Bryant said.
“This is a very important campaign for us.”
