Cleveland’s Carlos Baerga led the extra-base hit parade Thursday night at New York as the Indians scored 11 runs in the middle three innings in defeating the Yankees, 12-7.
Baerga had a triple and three doubles. The Indians got 16 hits and tied their season-high with nine doubles. Brook Jacoby had three hits, including two doubles.
Baerga hit an RBI triple in the first inning, but the Yankees bounced back for a 6-1 lead. Baerga doubled to start a four-run fourth inning, doubled home a run in a four-run fifth and hit a two-run double during a three-run sixth that made it 12-7.
Seattle 7, Chicago 3--Erik Hanson won his fifth consecutive decision and Henry Cotto homered, tripled and drove in four runs for the Mariners in Seattle.
The loss by the second-place White Sox reduced Oakland’s magic number for clinching the American League West to four.
Hanson (16-9) gave up eight hits and retired the last 11 batters.
