Two men facing federal charges of violating the civil rights of a Jewish man who escaped from Nazi Germany appeared in federal court Thursday to ask a judge to set bail so they could be released.
However, Federal Magistrate Irma Gonzalez set bail for only one of the men, 24-year-old Michael Dennis Danko of Chula Vista, ordering him to be held on a $100,000 cash forfeiture bond.
Gonzalez refused to set any bail for the second defendant, 21-year-old Jeffrey Alan Myrick, saying that he was a flight risk and posed a danger to the community because he had threatened the life of a co-defendant who is now cooperating with government investigators.
A $10,000 bond was set for Brett Pankauski, the third defendant.
All three men, as well as two co-defendants who pleaded guilty Sept. 26 to misdemeanor civil rights charges, are charged with harassing and intimidating National City pawnshop owner David Vogel because he is Jewish.
