Carlos Nunez Tellez, 39, one of the nine members of the ruling Sandinista directorate that controlled Nicaragua for a decade. The moderate Nunez won reelection as Assembly deputy last Feb. 25, although the Sandinistas lost control of the government. Nunez had joined the then-underground Sandinista National Liberation Front in 1969 and received guerrilla training abroad. He became part of the Sandinista directorate shortly before the group toppled Gen. Anastasio Somoza in 1979. His death was announced Tuesday in Cuba, where he had gone for treatment of an illness rumored to be leukemia.
