Royal 10, Newbury Park 0--Defensive back Tim Ross forced a fumble after catching Newbury Park’s Leodes Van Buren from behind on a 73-yard pass play and teammate Matt Tomaszewski recovered with 7:34 left to preserve the win at Moorpark College.
Tomaszewski, a senior linebacker, hadn’t practiced most of the week because of the death of his mother. He led an inspired Royal defense, which limited Newbury Park (1-4, 0-2) to 13 yards rushing and 73 yards passing, all of which came on one play.
Highlander quarterback Ryan Fien connected on a 10-yard scoring strike to Tony Liming on fourth down with 2:11 to play in the third quarter. Steve Prchal’s conversion completed the scoring. Prchal booted a 40-yard field goal in the first quarter to give Royal (5-0, 2-0) a 3-0 lead at the half.
Fien finished with 114 yards, completing 13 of 28 passes with one touchdown and one interception.
