Sol Kaplan, 71, child prodigy who became a conductor, pianist and composer for films and stage. At 12, Kaplan performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra, and he was a Carnegie Hall veteran by 21. Kaplan was nominated for an Academy Award for his score for the film “Tales of Manhattan.” His other film scores included “The Guns of August,” “The Spy Who Came In From the Cold,” “I Can Get It for You Wholesale” and “Over the Edge.” Kaplan’s career suffered for many years when he was blacklisted after appearing before the House Committee on Un-American Activities.
