A busy high school sports weekend continues today, with Southern Section and City championship events in cross-country and volleyball.
The City cross-country meet will begin at 11 a.m. at Pierce College in Woodland Hills, and the Southern Section meet will start at noon at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.
The City volleyball finals will be held at Cal State Dominguez Hills. The 3-A Division match between Sylmar and Marshall will begin at 5:30 p.m., and the 4-A matchup between Palisades and El Camino Real will start at 8 p.m.
The Southern Section volleyball finals will be held at Cerritos College, beginning with the Small Schools championship at 9:30 a.m. and concluding with the 5-A final at 8:15 p.m.
Belmont is expected to dominate the City cross-country meet. The Belmont boys had won seven consecutive titles until Taft dethroned them last year, but the Sentinels have defeated the Toreadors in three of four meets this season.
The Belmont girls are the defending champions and won last week’s preliminary heat with a perfect score of 15.
The Southern Section meet will feature two of the country’s top runners in Louie Quintana of Arroyo Grande and Deena Drossin of Agoura. Drossin established a course record for girls in the Mt. San Antonio Invitational last month with a time of 17 minutes 16 seconds. Quintana ran a personal best on the course of 14:40 at the same meet.
In volleyball, top-seeded Palisades and Marshall are expected to win their respective divisions.
