Bush Forgives Last of Egypt Arms Debt

WASHINGTON — President Bush has issued a directive forgiving Egypt’s remaining $997-million debt for military weapons, saying the Persian Gulf crisis makes such a move vital to U.S. interests, the White House announced Friday.
Egypt was among the first countries to contribute troops to the U.S.-led multinational force sent to the gulf after Iraq’s Aug. 2 invasion of Kuwait.
