United Unionizing Bid Fails: The International Assn. of Machinists has lost an effort to unionize United Airlines’ reservations and customer-service agents. A National Mediation Board count indicated that only 2,987 of the airline’s’ 12,909 reservation clerks, ticket agents and telephone sales clerk returned ballots. Although more than 99% of those voting supported the union, the law requires that at least half the employees eligible to vote in a union election return their ballots before the results are binding.
