La Verne : Housing Project Approved
Despite concerns about water and fire protection, the City Council on Tuesday voted 3 to 1 to divide a 296-acre site near north La Verne into lots for 184 houses. Mayor Pro Tem Thomas R. Harvey voted against the proposal, saying he is concerned about the cost of providing fire protection to the new homes.
Two members of the audience also objected, saying it is unwise to allow developments during a drought.
A partnership of Hughes Development Corp. and Lewis Homes of California plans to develop the site, called Marshall Canyon Estates II. Though the land--northeast of Brydon Road and Golden Hills Road--is under county jurisdiction, La Verne has applied to annex it. Harvey said that if the city does not annex the land, the county might allow more extensive development.
