NEC, Fujitsu Claim Computer Advances: Japan’s NEC Corp. said it has taken the lead again in the competitive high-end computer market by developing the world’s fastest general-purpose computer. NEC Executive Vice President Yoshiteru Ishii said the company’s new ACOS 3900 general-purpose mainframe computers use technology developed for its high-speed supercomputers. Also, Fujitsu Ltd., Japan’s biggest computer maker, brought out a new line of supercomputers, which it said were far cheaper than its top-of-the-line models. Earlier, Unisys said it expects to start shipping its model A19, which it called the industry’s fastest mainframe computer, in the third quarter.
