Venice : Grant for Homeless Pupils

Coeur d’Alene Elementary School in Venice has received a $10,000 grant from the Milken Family Foundation for the Connection Project, a program to meet the special needs of homeless pupils, the school principal said.
The program integrates the services of a child psychologist, social worker, remedial learning specialists and other support services for the grade-schoolers, some of whom attend up to nine schools a year.
One-third of the student body at Coeur d’Alene is homeless, one of the highest ratios in the nation, said Principal Beth Ojena. The children live in nearby shelters, cars, hotels and, in some cases, the beach.
Ojena said the Connection Project serves as a national model for homeless children.
