Estancia 82, Fremont Washington 72--It took 100 years for the Huskies to reach the State Division III boys’ final and about five minutes to be eliminated.
Washington (24-10) was outscored, 17-0, in the first quarter after opening a 3-0 lead, and never recovered. Estancia (29-5) became the second school to lose a Southern Section championship game and then win the State Division III title after receiving an at-large berth.
Estancia made 10 of 17 shots in the first quarter and opened a 26-12 lead. Washington (24-10) got to within six points on three occasions in the second half, but Mike Haas responded by scoring 11 of his 27 points in the last quarter to keep Estancia ahead.
Haas was punched by a Washington fan while walking off the arena floor. He was not hurt.
