New Spin on Gyroscope Charges: Two former employees filed civil charges alleging that Northrop used a gyroscope fluid in a cruise missile guidance system that would freeze at the temperatures at which it was required to perform. The allegations previously were severed from criminal and civil cases charging that Northrop falsified tests on the guidance system. Phillip E. Benson, an attorney in the Herbert Hafif law office who represents the ex-employees, said he believes negotiations between the Justice Department and Northrop to settle all the related cases have broken down in recent days.
