Signs of the Times?

Dri-Powr has replaced the rivulets. The leaping fish is caught in neon now. Against the Gothic lacework of an ancient live oak, a sign for fast food teases the eye with its EZ spelling. Foothill Boulevard--now a stream of signs--has layer upon layer of history, of course. It used to be a stretch of Route 66, the nation’s first transcontinental highway, “the mother road,” in John Steinbeck’s words. And there is still something motherly about it, offering the footloose explorer food and drink and rest.
