Whittier : Angry Parents Rally for Fired Phelan Principal
- Share via
Angry parents demanded the reinstatement of fired elementary school Principal Kirk Reeve at a meeting Monday of the Whittier City School District Board of Education.
More than 150 parents and teachers attended the emotionally charged meeting. Some carried signs bearing slogans such as “I Support Mr. Reeve Because My Son Supports Mr. Reeve” and “We Want Mr. Reeve.” They praised the Phelan Elementary School principal’s relationship with parents, teachers and students.
Board President Mary Weston said board members could not discuss personnel matters in public. She said parents and teachers would be notified should the board change its mind before June 30, Reeve’s last day as principal.
The board has given no specific reasons for Reeve’s dismissal. Parents and teachers vehemently disputed unconfirmed reports that Reeve was insensitive to the school’s bilingual program and had not properly prepared the school for state and local reviews of its programs.
