Baroque Festival in June to Include 5 Concerts

NEWPORT BEACH — The 11th annual Corona del Mar Baroque Festival will take place June 2-9 and will include five concerts instead of the traditional four. Subscribers will have a choice between two sets of four programs.
Concerts June 2, 3 and 9 will take place at St. Michael and All Angels Church, 3233 Pacific View Drive. Programs June 4 and 7 will be at the Sherman Library and Gardens, 2645 E. Coast Highway.
The series are (a) June 2, 3, 5 and 9; or (b) June 2, 3, 7 and 9. Tickets to each will cost $50 (or $100 for patron tickets). Tickets to individual programs will cost from $10 to $20.
The opening concert will include works by Bach, Handel and Vivaldi. Soloists will include Louise DiTullio, flute; Donald Leake, oboe; James Welch, organ; Clayton Haslop and Robin Olson, violins, and Kevin Plunkett, cello. Burton Karson, founding music director of the festival, will conduct.
Other events:
* June 3: Organ works by Bach, Samuel Scheidt, Thomas Arne and other composers; Jan Koetsier’s Partita for English Horn and Organ (composed in 1956). Robert Hubbard, English horn; Welch, organ.
* June 5: Harpsichord works by Scarlatti, Bach and other composers; sonatas for flute or cello by Handel and Bach. Malcolm Hamilton, harpsichord; Paul Rabinov, flute; Plunkett, cello.
* June 7: Cantatas and sonatas by Telemann and Handel. Jennifer Smith, soprano; Donald Christensen, baritone; Haslop and Olson, violins; Plunkett, cello. Karson will conduct.
* June 9: Handel’s “Dettingen Te Deum” and “Anthem on the Peace.” Smith, soprano; Brian Asawa and Dana Marsh, countertenors; Earle Patriarco, baritone. Karson will conduct the Festival Singers and Orchestra.
