California IN BRIEF : VENTURA : Man Arrested in Fire That Killed Toddler

A man who apparently had fought with his ex-girlfriend was arrested in a weekend fire that killed a 2-year-old girl and injured three other people at her apartment complex, police said. Calvin Michael Mitchell, 44, of Ventura was booked for investigation of murder and arson, Lt. Brad Talbot said. “We believe that Calvin Mitchell started this fire because he was having difficulty accepting the breakup of his relationship with Mary Ann Butler,” Talbot said. Butler was uninjured in the fire that killed Sarah Galka. Neighbors tried to rescue the child but flames stopped them, fire officials said. Flammable liquid was used to start the fire in the lobby of the two-story, five-unit apartment complex. Mitchell was arrested because he gave “inconsistent statements,” and because others said he had recently argued with Butler, Talbot said.
