COUNTYWIDE : Shelter to Stay Open as Cold Continues

The emergency homeless shelter in Oxnard will stay open while the weather remains chilly, officials said Wednesday.
The facility, in the National Guard Armory at 351 South K St., was scheduled to close March 31.
Recent storms prompted Gov. Pete Wilson to permit state shelters to remain open when forecasters predict temperatures below 40 degrees or when there is a 50% chance of rain with temperatures below 50 degrees.
The Oxnard shelter is operated by the Ventura County chapter of the American Red Cross and is open from Dec. 1 to the end of March.
“We have now served more than 3,300 persons at the shelter this year,” Red Cross spokesman Dana Howell said. Last year, the shelter provided beds and warm meals to 2,980 people.
