One person was killed and five others injured in a two-vehicle accident in Simi Valley Thursday, police said.
The accident occurred shortly after 4 p.m. on Tierra Rejada Road near Stargaze Place, forcing the closure of the road and causing major traffic tie-ups on the nearby Moorpark and Simi Valley freeways, police said.
Two Ventura County sheriff’s helicopters were used to airlift some of the victims to nearby hospitals in Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks, police said. No names were released.
Simi Valley Police Lt. Neal Rein said the woman who was killed was in her early 60s, but he could not provide any additional information.
Details of the accident were sketchy.
Witnesses said a Toyota sports car with three men and a woman inside was heading east on Tierra Rejada Road and appeared to be smoking before it veered out of control and slammed into the side of a van heading in the opposite direction.
The Toyota van, carrying two elderly women, flipped over onto the curb, witnesses said.
The sports car “was out of control, something was wrong,” said Mike Cain, an eyewitness. “There was a lot of smoke. I thought the car was on fire at first, then they collided. It was pretty incredible. I felt like I was going into shock.”
