Two men were injured Thursday afternoon, one seriously, when the car they were riding in rolled twice, ejecting both men and landing on top of one.
The driver, William S. Washington, 33, of Carson was in critical condition with chest injuries at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol said. The passenger, Frank W. Phillips, 31, of Huntington Beach, suffered a bruise on his forehead.
The accident occurred about 1:10 p.m. as Washington was driving his 1986 BMW northbound on the San Diego Freeway and noticed he had passed the off-ramp for the 7th Street Long Beach exit, Whitten said.
Washington turned sharply and lost control of the car. The BMW turned over twice, jolting both men out of the vehicle, Whitten said. Neither occupant was wearing a seat belt, he said.
The car landed on top of Washington, Whitten said, and Phillips was catapulted about 30 feet.
