Japanese Rice Farmers Hold Rally: About 50,000 Japanese farmers gathered in Tokyo in the largest rally of its kind to threaten politicians and businessmen with retaliation if Japan’s ban on rice imports is lifted. Japan, which annually consumes about 10 million tons of rice, bans commercial imports of the staple, arguing that rice self-sufficiency is a matter of national security.
