Nothing Macho in Killing Sharks
I was saddened to see the Los Angeles Times devote so much space and enthusiasm to cover such an insensitive “sporting event” as the “Big Bucks Shark Tournament” held in Oxnard (Ventura County Edition, June 22).
It seems popular to scold Japan for killing sea turtles, but we Americans see nothing wrong with making full-fledged public events from the slaughter of innocent animals, such as pigeon-shooting contests, deer-hunting competitions, fishing derbies--and “Big Bucks Shark Tournaments.”
It’s about time people stop thinking that slaughtering animals for fun is being macho. Personally, I see nothing macho about it.
