Recognition Enhances Violent Reality
Your article entitled “Gangs Broaden Turf and Violence” on June 9 only made it more difficult for cities such as Fillmore to guide teen-agers away from life-threatening involvement in gangs. It is discouraging to see a generally responsible publication damage community efforts so thoughtlessly.
Gangs are a violent reality that must be thwarted at every opportunity. Articles such as yours enhance their image in the eyes of those kids most at risk. One of the driving forces behind gang involvement is recognition. Gang members crave publicity. Their violence, graffiti and dress are all aimed at obtaining the kind of publicity you provided them.
SCOTT LEE, Mayor of Fillmore
