Insurer May Take Over Great Republic Health Coverage: Blue Cross of California said it is negotiating to offer health insurance to 25,000 policyholders of Great Republic Insurance Co., the financially troubled insurer that was seized this week. But for the time being, investors can’t cash out or borrow against policies issued by the Santa Barbara-based firm. Insurance Commissioner John Garamendi said he is trying to place Great Republic’s 6,800 life insurance policies with another insurer. Health insurance policyholders will continue to receive full benefits and payments, and life insurance policies will continue to pay full death benefits.
