A 50-year-old San Diego man shot in apparent self-defense a man who was reportedly trying to break into his car Friday morning, police said.
Hay Chay, who lives in the 800 block of 20th Street in Logan Heights, shot Arturo Gonzalez in the chest at 5:38 a.m. when Gonzalez attacked him with a screwdriver that he had been using to break into Chay’s car, Sgt. Mike Gibbs said.
Chay has been the victim of prior car burglaries, Gibbs said.
Gonzalez, who is in his 20s, is in critical condition at UC San Diego Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said.
