NEWPORT BEACH : Traffic Panel Urges Skateboarding Ban

At the request of miffed 15th Street residents, the city’s Traffic Affairs Committee plans to recommend to the City Council that skateboarding along that street from the ocean to the bay be banned.
Jean VanOrnum, who brought complaints of property damage caused by skaters to the City Council, said a ban at Newport Pier forced the skaters south to 15th Street. She said skateboarders whiz in and out of traffic, endanger pedestrians and destroy public and private property.
“I think it’s great,” VanOrnum said of the committee’s decision. “I was very pleasantly surprised. . . . I’m just hoping now that the council will see fit to do it.”
The council could vote on the committee’s recommendation next month.
