A 14-year-old girl was hit and killed by a car while crossing Mission Gorge Road near Margerum Avenue in the San Carlos section of San Diego late Saturday, police said.
The girl was hit at 8:27 p.m. and taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital, where she died of massive head injuries, said supervising nurse Sharon Miller.
Miller said the girl was alive upon arrival but died while doctors attempted resuscitation.
The name of the girl, who lived in San Diego, had not been released pending notification of next of kin, said a spokesman for the San Diego County Medical Examiner.
Police had no other details late Saturday.
