There’s No Encore for Memphis State; Mississippi Defeats the Tigers, 10-0

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Marvin Courtney scored on a three-yard run and Brian Lee kicked a 33-yard field goal in the first quarter as Mississippi beat Memphis State, 10-0, in a mistake-filled game Saturday night.
Memphis State, which upset USC, 24-10, last Monday, committed five turnovers and was unable to capitalize when Mississippi (2-0) lost two fumbles in its own territory in the fourth quarter. The Tigers got inside the Ole Miss 20 both times, but Joe Allison missed a field-goal attempt and reserve quarterback Joe Cole had a pass intercepted with nine seconds left.
Memphis State’s starting quarterback, Keith Benton, a star in the victory over USC, fumbled three times in the first half, twice in his own territory.
Courtney’s score came in the first quarter four plays after a poor Memphis State punt gave the Rebels possession at the Tiger 29.
