Students Win Battle for Bible Meetings

A group of high school students in Buffalo, N.Y., has won a four-year legal battle for permission to conduct after-school Bible club meetings in a classroom.

The dispute began in 1987 when McKinley High School Principal Crystal Boling denied the students’ request. She cited an advisory letter from the school district noting that the district’s rejection of a similar request nearly a decade earlier had been vindicated in court.

Supreme Court Justice Leo J. Fallon approved a settlement under which the district will not appeal a permanent injunction requiring it to allow the students to meet and will pay $125,000 of the $400,000 in legal fees sought by the students.
