Carlsbad 20, El Toro 12--Carlsbad (1-1) rolled to a 20-0 halftime lead behind a strong passing game and several key mistakes by El Toro (1-1).
Carlsbad quarterback Brian Byrne completed 20 of 27 (including 10 of his first 11) for 191 yards and two touchdowns. That was nearly as much offense as El Toro could manage as a team. El Toro rallied in the second half, scoring on a 29-yard pass from Bill McFadden to Jason Bailey with 41 seconds left in the third quarter. The extra point was blocked. Jeff Brizic scored on a four-yard sweep to the left with 4:39 remaining to cut the score to 20-12. McFadden was sacked on the two-point conversion try.
El Toro was driving again late, but the game ended as McFadden fumbled the snap and was buried as time ran out.
Carlsbad took advantage of El Toro’s first major miscue when Warren Brindley picked up a blocked punt and ran 27 yards for the score with 7:39 left in the half. The extra point gave Carlsbad a 13-0 lead.
El Toro’s mental mistakes continued when three players failed to cover a bobbled return on the ensuing kickoff. Eric Holt recovered for Carlsbad at the El Toro 40. Four plays later, Byrne again hit David Kozlowski (nine catches, 82 yards), this time on a three-yard score. The extra point was wide and Carlsbad took a 20-0 halftime lead.
