A former San Diego city councilman was charged with criminal contempt of court by a federal grand jury.
John Michael Schaefer, a La Jolla attorney, had violated an order by U.S. District Judge Rudi Brewster that prohibited Schaefer from bringing suit against any principal, agent or employee related to a bankruptcy proceeding that Schaefer began in 1987, U.S. Atty. William Braniff in a press release Thursday.
Despite the order, Schaefer, who filed a Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition in 1987, filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court against the trustee of the bankruptcy estate, the law firm representing the trustee and an accounting firm retained to assist the proceedings, the release said.
Schaefer is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 4.
