Montclair Prep punctuated its undefeated Alpha League season with a 68-0 romp over Marshall Fundamental on Saturday night at Pasadena City College.
The game was played with a running clock in the second half.
Eliel Swinton, the area’s rushing leader, gained 223 yards and scored four touchdowns in 10 carries. Montclair Prep (8-1, 5-0 in league play) has not lost a league game in the past three years. So why were the Mounties sporting so many ambivalent feelings?
Probably because Saturday’s game marked the last time this Montclair Prep team will take the field.
The Mounties, although they are clearly the No. 1 team in Division X, must wait for meetings between the school’s lawyers and the Southern Section early next week to see if an agreement can be worked out in which the section would lift the ban on playoff activity for the school’s athletic program.
The penalty was levied in April when the section found Montclair Prep guilty of recruiting violations. “Since it might have been my last game, I went all out on every play,” senior quarterback Mike Lincavage said. “All the seniors got together before the game and told the team, ‘Hey, it’s probably our last game. Let’s go out with a bang.’ ”
