Intel to Announce New Supercomputer: Intel Corp. today will announce its second-generation supercomputer, which will contain up to 4,000 microprocessors that can reel off 300 billion calculations per second. The system, called the Paragon XP-S, will cost from $2 million for a model that can process 5 billion calculations a second, or gigaflops, to one for $55 million that runs at 300 gigaflops, Intel said last week. The announcement was to be made at the Supercomputing ’91 conference in Albuquerque, N.M., an annual gathering of supercomputer experts.
