EAST ROUNDUP : No. 16 Syracuse Survives West Virginia Threat, 16-10

Marvin Graves’ passing may have been off Saturday, but his timing was perfect.

Graves high-stepped seven yards for the go-ahead touchdown with 7:30 left to lift No. 16 Syracuse to a 16-10 victory over West Virginia at Syracuse, N.Y.

“My first touchdown of the season--it couldn’t come at a better time,” said Graves, whose scoring run came on his 98th carry of the year.

Graves’ touchdown made up for his eight-for-19 passing performance.

David Walker gained 118 yards in 21 carries for Syracuse, which improved to 9-2 with the win over the Mountaineers (6-5).

Senior safety Tim Sandquist saved Syracuse’s ninth victory in 11 games with an interception at the Orangemen’s one-yard line with 54 seconds left.

The Orangemen, who have won five in a row, are headed to the Hall of Fame Bowl at Tampa, Fla., against Ohio State (8-3) on New Year’s Day.

Wake Forest 52, Navy 24--Navy quarterback Jim Kubiak set school records with 54 passes and 406 yards, but the Midshipmen still lost at Annapolis, Md.

Wake Forest (3-8) scored 24 points in the third quarter to extend its 21-14 halftime lead.

Akron 37, Temple 32--Jeff Sweitzer connected with Harold Robinson on a 48-yard scoring play with 1:20 left as the Zips (5-6) beat Temple (2-9) in a nonconference game at Philadelphia.

Dartmouth 31, Princeton 13--Al Rosier rushed for 190 yards and a touchdown at Hanover, N.H., as Dartmouth (7-2-1, 6-0-1) beat Princeton (8-2, 5-2) to win its first outright Ivy League title in 13 years.

Yale 24, Harvard 13--Jim Gouveia and Nick Crawford rushed for fourth-quarter touchdowns in an Ivy League victory at New Haven, Conn., as Yale (6-4, 4-3) posted its third consecutive winning season and knocked Harvard (4-5-1, 4-2-1) out of second place.

Pennsylvania 14, Cornell 13--Sundiata Rush gained 94 yards and scored a fourth-quarter touchdown to lead the Quakers (2-8, 2-5) to an Ivy League victory over Cornell (5-5, 4-3) at Philadelphia.

Brown 28, Columbia 23--Brett Brown rushed for 123 yards and Bruce Smith had 121 at Providence, R.I., as the Bears (1-9) beat Columbia (1-9) for their first victory.
