SOUTHEASTERN ROUNDUP : Stewart Leads Tennessee to Victory Over Kentucky

HONSHU, Japan — Freshman James Stewart carried 26 times for 146 yards and a touchdown and caught three passes for 32 yards in leading No. 10 Tennessee to a 16-7 Southeastern Conference victory over Kentucky Saturday at Lexington, Ky.

Tennessee, 8-2 overall and 4-2 in the SEC, gave up only 11 first downs and 145 yards--80 rushing and 65 passing--in posting its seventh consecutive victory over the Wildcats.

Stewart scored on an eight-yard run off right tackle that gave Tennessee a 16-0 lead with 9:47 left in the third quarter. Stewart carried six times for 44 yards in the 10-play, 65-yard drive.

John Becksvoort kicked a 22-yard field goal in the first quarter and connected from 35 and 28 yards in the second quarter in giving Tennessee a 9-0 advantage at halftime in windy conditions.

Tennessee, which will play Penn State in the Fiesta Bowl, closes its season next Saturday against visiting Vanderbilt.

Kentucky (3-8, 0-7), completing its worst season since 0-10-1 in 1982, got on the scoreboard when fullback Craig Walker dived over the middle from the one with 13:50 left in the game.

Mississippi State 24, Mississippi 9--Sleepy Robinson passed for a touchdown and ran for another as the Liberty Bowl-bound Bulldogs beat the Rebels at Starkville, Miss.

Mississippi State (6-4, 4-3) beat Mississippi (5-6, 1-6) for only the second time in nine years.

LSU 39, Tulane 20--Odell Beckham ran for 137 yards and two touchdowns as Louisiana State (5-6) went to the running game in the second half to beat the Green Wave (1-10) at New Orleans.
