Officer Returns Fire, Hits Man

SAN CLEMENTE — A police officer shot and wounded a man late Monday night after the man apparently shot at the officer outside a house, witnesses said.
Police declined to comment on the shooting. But according to neighbors, an officer arrived at a house in the 200 block of Avenida Lobeiro just after 8 p.m. and confronted a man there.
The man, who was not identified, shot at the officer, who then fired a number of rounds and wounded the man, several witnesses said.
“I heard about six to eight shots,” said one neighbor who was in his garage at the time of the shooting. “I looked outside and saw the officer, but he told me to get back and stay inside.”
The condition of the victim was not known. It was not immediately known if the officer who was shot at was injured.
