San Diego police, San Diego County sheriff’s deputies and California Highway Patrol officers searched a residential area in Escondido early Monday after gunfire was exchanged between deputies and a man who had been pursued in a stolen truck.
Deputies Joseph Alvarez and Craig Heyer stopped the stolen pickup at 2:45 a.m. at Rancho Roble and Mountain Meadow roads, but the driver and three passengers got out and ran away, said Pearl Janulewicz, spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Department.
One of the men fired two rounds at the deputies, and Alvarez returned fire, she said. The gunman fired again before fleeing. Neither deputy was injured, and it was not known if the gunman was hit, authorities said.
The area was searched until dawn, but no one was found, they said.
